Shield Transmutation is found in the University, near the top of a large circular staircase on an upper floor. Follow the main progression route from the Main Hall through the elevator and chandelier crossing, then interact with the soldier bound in plague growths to claim the ability.
Poison obstacles appear earlier than this unlock. Leave those routes until you obtain Shield; its protective barrier uses Nephtoglobin while active.
University route to Shield

- Progress through the University Main Hall to the elevator serving the upper floors.
- Ride upward and continue through the chandelier crossing. Use these landmarks rather than an unconfirmed elevator-floor number.
- Enter the high chamber with the large circular staircase. The poisonous area on the right helps identify the approach; you do not need to force your way through it before collecting Shield.
- Climb the circular stairs and find the plague-bound soldier near the top.
- Approach and interact with the soldier to unlock the Shield Transmutation.

Using Shield for hazardous crossings
Shield creates a barrier that protects William from attacks, poisonous gas, toxic fields, and burning ground. Equip the Transmutation, check your Nephtoglobin supply, and activate it before entering a dangerous stretch. Keep moving toward safe ground while watching the remaining resource: protection fails if Shield is inactive or its Nephtoglobin supply runs out.

The University pickup provides the core ability needed for earlier poison-gated routes, including the poisoned Fortress approach. You do not need the final Shield upgrade to begin returning to those areas.
Shield upgrade and achievement
One achievement requires the final Shield upgrade and using Shield Bash to knock an enemy into an abyss. Highest-tier Transmutation materials come from limited environmental or quest rewards rather than ordinary enemy drops, so reserve the appropriate material for Shield if you are pursuing that objective. This upgrade goal is separate from obtaining its basic environmental protection.
